Today's HOWTO: Crimp Ethernet Cables

Eight Position (RJ-45) Modular Cable Wiring
WiringEnding

A UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) cable consists of four twisted cable pairs. The standard colors for these pairs are:

  • white/blue - blue
  • white/orange - orange
  • white/green - green
  • white/brown - brown

There are two different cables you may need, and the wiring has to be done as follows:

  • For a Hub to Hub or Computer to Computer connection you need a Crossover Cable: one end T568A and the other end T568B.
  • For a Hub to Computer connection, you need a Straight-Through Cable: T568B on each end.

This wiring scheme is the most common, but of course you can make a Straight-Through Ethernet Cable using T568A on each end.

All 1000Base-T 100Base-T and 10Base-T Category "X" are wired this way (or equivalent).

Search Google for further reading on Ethernet cables.
