It objective is to develop methods for high-quality machine translation, formal verification, reasoning, and information retrieval of mission-critical documents such as contracts and legal texts. The PhD positions are located jointly in two research groups: Language Technology and Formal Methods. The PhD supervisors will be professors from these groups: Aarne Ranta (REMU principal scientist), Koen Claessen, and Gerardo Schneider.

REMU builds on the unique joint competence of the Department in the areas of language technology, formal methods, and functional programming. Its objective is to develop methods for high-quality machinetranslation, formal verification, reasoning, and information retrieval of missioncritical documents such as contracts and legal texts. Building on formalized interlingual representations (abstract syntax), the REMU project will targetapplications in several parallel languages. The research problems range from fundamental language-theoretic questions (e.g. ambiguity detection) to practicalsystem building (e.g. an editor by which end users can build multilingual webpages). In the mid ground, the project has topics in grammar engineering, theorem proving, software testing methodology, and logical modelling. The PhD student positions are open for students with a Masters degree in computer science, computational linguistics, or a related field. Their PhD topics will be selected on an individual basis from the task defined in REMU's research plan.

The positions are for five years, with a start between 1 June and 31 December 2013, as agreed with the selected holders of the positions. The PhD students will work 20% of their time in teaching and other departmental duties. PhD students get a regular full-time salary, sufficient for a small family to live in Gothenburg.

PhD in Interactive Configuration of High Performance Renovation of Buildings

The PhD is part of a project called CRIBA for Industrialized Wood and Steel Construction and Renovation, funded by the French Government with the agreement of the ADEME Agency. It involves several academic laboratories and SMEs, in the areas of Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes. This project aims to industrialize high performance thermal renovation of mid-rise (upto seven stories) residential buildings. The renovation is based on external panels, including insulation, windows, doors and cladding, fixed onto a metal structure around the whole building. With the new thermal envelop and equipments, the building must achieve a really low energy performance 25kWh/m2/year. The aim of our work-package is to firstly specify, design and program a knowledge-based system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge-based_Configuration) supporting the industrialized process, and secondly to extract experts knowledge and formalize building codes in order to build a generic model of the renovation (bill-of-material and assembly process).

Work to be done:
The aim of the PhD is to specify the functional requirements in order to adapt our configuration system (http://cofiade.enstimac.fr/cgi-bin/
cofiade.pl) for high performance appartment buildings and to build CRIBA renovation models. The configuration will simultaneously enable the interactive definition of the bill-of-material and building site assembly process. The configuration process is supported by constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) approaches and a specific description language. Knowing this context, the PhD student will mainly work on problem modelling and specification rather than programming and will be involved in :
*for the scientific part of the PhD, the study, analyses, selection, adaptation and eventually programming of :
– filtering algorithms to ensure decisions consistency and interactivity,
– geometrical constraints to determine the position of panels, windows
and doors,
– multi instances of groups of components (generic and parametric groups),
* for the practical part of the PhD:
– the model of external panels range, the generic bill-of-material, the generic assembly process,
– the model of links between the previous models through technical and
expert know-how relations.

Profile and general information:

The candidate with the following interests are welcome:
– knowledge or interest in civil engineering,
– knowledge or interest in programming language, (mainly in design and/or implementation),
– interest in knowledge-based systems and design-aiding systems,
– willingness to combine theoretical with practical work,
– good spoken and written communication skills (French and English).
The PhD student will be directly employed by the Ecole des Mines d'Albi-Carmaux for 3 years. Her/His income is at least around 1300 euros per month. She/he will be working in Albi, 80 km far from Toulouse, with many travels to Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes. The PhD will take place in the Industrial Engineering Lab . Research works carried out in our laboratory deal with product configuration, knowledge, supply chain management, risk and project management, enterprise modeling, information systems in enterprise.

Procedure and Contact:

Send your detailed Curriculum Vitae and references to Élise Vareilles highlighting your assets. You will be informed rapidly whether you have been selected for an oral presentation, which will take place in Toulouse.
Postdoc - Stanford Natural Language Processing Group (Stanford, CA, USA)

The Stanford Natural Language Processing Group is interested in hiring 1 or 2 new postdocs for the coming academic year and beyond. The postdocs will work together with other postdocs, graduate students, research staff, and faculty on exciting projects at the forefront of probabilistic and deep learning models of language and computational linguistics, involving large-scale, supervised, semi-supervised and unsupervised learning.

For these positions we are looking for candidates interested in working in conjunction with our DARPA-funded research projects on machine translation and natural language understanding. Research topics could include: syntax-based MT, semantics-based MT, applications of linguistic analysis or large scale optimization to MT, deep learning for NLP, textual similarity and entailment, coreference, relation extraction, or knowledge-base construction and inference.

Postdocs are initially a 1-year position, with good possibilities for extension to 2 or 3 years (depending on performance and continued funding).

The Stanford NLP Group is a fun, collaborative group providing many opportunities for learning, hands-on research and teamwork. See http://nlp.stanford.edu/. The Stanford NLP Group values having a diverse mix of people and is committed to equal opportunity in employment; we are always pleased to identify anyone with great qualifications and promise.
