Short Bio

Ricardo Baeza-Yates is world renowned researcher in computer science, specially in the area of Information Retrieval where one of his books “Modern Information Retrieval” has become a reference textbook for many courses in the whole world.


He focused his views on information as a basis to develop a strong research record on the web as an information source. He is active in the areas of data structures and algorithms, data mining, text an image data bases and visualization software.

The application of this knowledge to web turned him first into the Director of the Center for Web Research of the Engineering School of Chile University (until 2005) and the he become a full ICREA professor in Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona where he founded the Web Research Group. Then he become the  Yahoo! Vicepresident of Research for Europe and Latin America and Director Yahoo! Research Labs Barcelona and Santiago de Chile, the Barcelona Center being one of the first ones in Spain to show a strong relationship between business  funded and publicly funded research centers in computing.
