Jan Van Leeuwen has a strong record of academic research in theoretical computer science. He also is active in the area of joint initiatives with respect both to computer science resarch and education. in this respect he is very active in the activities of Informatics Europe,  the association of computer science departments of universities and research laboratories, public and private, in Europe and neighboring areas. The mission of Informatics europe is to foster de development of quality research and teaching in informatics (information and computer sciences). He has been involved in the ongoing discussion, design and implementation of the new directives for university education that stem from the Bologna directives.
