CaliforniaDr. Elitza Maneva has just arrived from the USA to join the LSI Department as a Visiting Professor. Her research is in theoretical computer science and her previous work spans a range of topics as diverse as quantum information, game theory, error-correcting codes, and constraint satisfaction. Here she plans to develop a research program on rigorous analysis of physics heuristic methods and their applications to hard combinatorial problems. This semester she will be teaching together with María José Serna and Salvador Roura the first year programming course for mathematicians. (full version...)

RellotgesThe Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), the National Centre for Micoreletronics (CNM) and the Elastix company have started a research project to introduce into current technologies for integrated circuit design, new techniques to actually devise asynchronous circuits, i.e, circuits without clocks, which have enormous advantages over traditional, synchronous ones. The research is funded by a grant of the Spanish Industry Ministry. We talked with Dr. Josep Carmona leader of the UPC participation in the project "R+D in techniques and CAD tools for designing integrated asynchronous circuits". He was happy to explain what is involved in working with asynchronous circuits. (full version...)

MichaelJacksonThe 16th IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference took place in Barcelona from the 8th to the 12th of September 2008. The conference focused was on "Requirement Engineering for a Sustainable World". Software Engineering is generally not physical in nature and, therefore, we could get mistaken by its abstraction. However, as Michael Jackson from The Open University said during his speech "Problems, Solutions and Requirements", Software Engineering is closer to other engineerings than we may think. Software does play a vital role in controlling machines that have vital impact on the global environment as much as it is related to other engineerings, people's desires and solutions. What can we learn from other engineerings? (full version...)

Contracting "CONTRACT"

ContracteCONTRACT is an EU Sixth Framework Programme led by Dr. Javier Vázquez. It deals with the creation of electronic contracts that allow for the verification and monitoring of contract compliance in networked environments formed by diverse organizations offering their services under contractual agreements. Dr. Javier Vázquez, KELMG Group at LSI department, is the coordinator of this ambitious project. (full version...)
