GESSI, Research in Software Engineering
The research group GESSI has, nowadays, more than twenty people working and it also has around ten PhD Thesis up and running. It is a one and close to the industry needs. The procurement and implementation of COTS components, requirements engineering and software as a service are some of interests of the group. Their research is fundamental for application.

The group is moving on to research about software services. Having in mind that software is becoming a basic need even for the most minute aspects and tools of day to day life, this seems to be a very interesting and challenging field of research.
The group has several PhD students presently preparing their theses. They have quite a diverse background which is also reflected in their geographical origins. Many of them come from the other shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
GESSI is currently addressed towards establishing strong technology transfer contracts with companies. The people at GESSI think that working in cooperation with industry in a real context is an enriching experience and it could bring the much needed economic support for their research. GESSI has also the intention to become a stable research group at the front line in their field with the ability to initiate and manage big projects. Their hope is to see how pieces of software that have been developed in small scale environments, do improve and can reach a wider audience and widespread usage.

The leader of the GESSI research group is Dr. Xavier Franch. He is a person that devoted himself to research since his first years at the university. He and Dr. Pere Botella have been the leader of the group since the very first moment that the group becomes into existence. In those years almost nobody had a clear idea in Spain of what Computing was about and not much people ventured into studying computer science here. However, everyone was talking about it and it had the promise of a great revolution. Xavier Franch and some fellow students, among them current associate professor Xavier Burgués and two or three more colleagues, decided to start a collaboration with professor Pere Botella when they where in their third undergraduate year. This resulted in the first of many research papers to follow. As soon as he graduated, Dr. Franch started as a professor. Curiously enough, his decision to pursue this topic for his PhD thesis stemmed from his teaching experience. Before writing his PhD thesis, Xavier Franch had authored a textbook on Data Structures. While writing it he realised that there were many gaps that needed a good deal of research to be filled. He presently is still very interested in research about the creation of effective high-quality software. He also tries to promote the mobility of researchers as well as international cooperation. His main effort right now is to succeed in establishing a consolidated research group where all members of this research family feel at ease, motivated and with the urge to find new things. Dr. Franch feels a particular curiosity about the different approaches to computing that different places in the world take. Probably Dr. Franch interest in working with foreign researchers may explain why he has devoted the last two years to make the organization of the 16th IEEE International Requirement Engineering Conference (RE'08) a reality. It will take place from September 8th to 12th, its organization a demanding experience for all members of the group, although quite an enriching one. Carme Quer, another member of GESSI, is busy also organizing WER'08 a more locally oriented event about Requirements Engineering that will take place on September 12th, 2008. |
