Recognition of the future and the past. (full version...)
1620Dr. Pere Botella is an Industrial Engineer. He got his engineering degree at UPC in 1972. He was born as a curious person with a huge enthusiasm about learning new things. Curious to know what an Assembler 1620 could be made him become interested in computing. He is a person who loves new challenges, he was the Dean of the Barcelona School of Informatics for 6 years, as well as Vice-Chancellor of the UPC in two periods. Dr. Pere Botella saw the birth of the Barcelona School of Informatics, as well as the beginning of our department, the Software Department (LSI).  (full version...)

PremiGenomPort is a project initiated by Dr. Xavier Messeguer and his PhD student Bernat Gel. The crown jewel of the project is a tool for navigating the human genome much in the same way as one zooms in and out the Earth with Google Earth. But this ability is also integrated with the creation of user communities though a web based application. In this way GenomPort bring people closer to their origins. Because of its interest and technical a research quality it has been awarded the BDigital Prize.  (full version...)


UllThe research group GESSI has, nowadays, more than twenty people working in it and it also has around ten PhD Thesis up and running. It is a group that is getting a consolidated position on information systems software engineering research. Their research field is very applied and closed to the companies' necessities. The procurement and implementation of COTS components, requirements engineering and software as a service are some of the science and technology interests of the group. (full version...)
 


The other side of technology

GloberiaDr. Miquel Barceló talks about a less popular side of technology. However, it is now probably the closest one to the general public. We talked with him about history, society, sustainability and professional ethics within a technological atmosphere. Dr. Barceló talks, as well, about Science Fiction as a means of Science Communication and as a base of ethical and sociological studies. The most humanist side of technology is a the basis of the Master and PhD course "Sustainability, Technology and Humanism" that he has strived to set up for long. (full version...)


Professor Roberto Nieuwenhuis talks about why it is important that a SAT solver gets a bronze medal... and in the process tells us about a whole family of difficult problems and how to solve them. (full version...)
