Everything for the people and the people. Esteve Almirall, among others, is one of the Spanish precursory of a new way of understanding innovation. They outline the user's participation in the research and production process. They encourage people to become part of a innovative society and they bet on a new economic model. All this revolution is called Living Labs, a new model that is slipping in all over the planet.

The majority of what we call reality is just our own reality. Obviously the real environment creates signals that form our sensory input, however can we get signals from beyond the real environment? What would happen if we lived in an apparently real situation but it was actually a virtual world? How would we react to a fire in such a virtual world? Would we exercise more if we had a virtual trainer? Mel Slater and the scientists who work with him ask themselves these and many other questions. They play in the fuzzy limits between reality and fiction.

The research group KEMLG applies Artificial Intelligence Techniques to solve real problems highly complex. Environmental processes and water quality management at the river basin are some of the pillars of their research. "Environmental Modelling and Software 2008" will be the fourth International Conference hold by the Environmental Modelling and software Society. Miquel SÃ nchez and Joaquim Comas (UdG) are organising such a big event this year. The conference preparation has given me the opportunity to talk to Miquel SÃ nchez about the intersection between IA and Environment.

Speeding up business through intelligent agents

Globalization and the consequent need to integrate and coordinate between companies that work together for temporary operations, took Steven Willmott to work in the integration of autonomous agents within business processes. The problems that arise in such scenarios out are non trivial. Contracts, agreements and negotiation between intelligent agents and the extension of the Web Services paradigm are also Willmott's bet in a new company: 3scale.
