The PhD. Programs

A PhD. program at the UPC includes courses, projects, research and a doctoral dissertation. The Department of Software participates in two such PhD. programs:

Both programs are intense, research-oriented programs leading to a PhD. in Computer Science (in catalan Doctor en Informàtica, Programa de Software/Intel.ligència Artificial, LSI). Their emphasis is currently on areas of software engineering, theory of computation, logic in computer science, parallel and sequential algorithms, information systems, computer graphics, knowledge engineering, natural language understanding, robotics, machine learning -symbolic and subsymbolic-, and knowledge representation.

In these programs also other UPC departments and research institutes participate, as well as departments from other Catalan Universities and the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the National Council of Science (CSIC).

The department encourages qualified students with a strong background in computer science, engineering or other formal related disciplines (mathematics, physics) to follow its PhD. programs in Computer Science. Students with strong undergraduate records and training in computer science are directly admitted to both programs. Previous authorization of the UPC's Doctoral Committee is required for students from other areas.

Here is some more information (in Catalan) about the PhD, and the courses information (Soft and AI). Programs, including admission requirements and procedures, legislation, and other items, in a page-by-page fashion (if you want to print it out, it is better to fetch it complete here.)

Here you will find (not yet but some day) information about the PhD. thesis (Soft and AI) at the Software Department since 1989.
