Knowledge Engineering  & Machine Learning Group

Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.

The Knowledge engineering and machine learning group (KEMLg) is part of the public Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) whose main goals are the analysis, design, implementation and application of various artificial intelligence techniques in relation to complex real-world systems and domains, such as collaboration environments for strategic innovation, wastewater management, health, environmental processes, cultural heritage, education and tourism. The artificial intelligence techniques involved, in which the KEMLg is expert, are:

•    knowledge representation, ontologies, the semantic Web and Web services;
•    software agents, electronic institutions and multi-agent systems;
•    intelligent decision support systems;
•    data mining;
•    supervised and unsupervised machine learning;
•    Bayesian networks;
•    case-based reasoning;
•    knowledge-based systems;
•    knowledge acquisition and knowledge discovery from structural analysis;
•    simulation and analytical models.

The KEMLg is currently involved in four EU funded projects: the IP project "Laboranova: a collaboration environment for strategic innovation", to change existing technological and social infrastructures for collaboration and support knowledge workers in sharing, improving and evaluating ideas systematically across teams, companies and networks (IST-5-035262-IP), with a total budget of 10M€; WINDS; ENGAGE; and ASPIC, focused on knowledge-based services for the information society.
